Why Video Training

In the daily performance of their duties, police officers are required to use force to protect the public, themselves, apprehend criminals and keep the peace. Officers are granted powers to use force in amounts that are reasonable. At times it becomes necessary for police officers to use force that may cause serious injury or death. Officers are accountable for the level of force used to resolve each situation.

It is necessary that police officers be equipped and trained to use a wide range of force options to permit the safe resolution of various types of incidents. These options should range from the use of good verbal skills, empty hand techniques, chemical weapons, Taser weapons, impact weapons (baton) and firearms. This range of options gives officers the necessary tools to deal with a variety of incidents and maximize the public’s safety.

Most questions relating to use of force are not a result of improper application of force, but rather the improper use of a force option for the given situation. Mistakes in judgment concerning an improper selection of force will have serious consequences for the officer and his/her department.

As a result, it is imperative that police departments train their officers in the escalation and descalation of situations based upon various use of force options. The correct option can bring a peaceful resolution to a potentially life-threatening situation. In a domestic violence environment or attempted suicide situation, for example, emphasis on the good use of verbal skills is essential. Many police departments have found the use of escalation of force scenarios to be an effective tool when training their officers to handle these types of situations.

Understanding how to properly asses a situation is also critical to saving the lives of police officers. When a police officer over estimates the seriousness of a threat, the suspect is often harmed. However, it is a much more frequent occurrence for the police officer to under estimate the seriousness of a threat. When this happens the officer is often injured or killed. Use of force training is essential to protect the lives of police officers.
